The Gunpowder Plot of Guy Fawkes, 5th November, 1605.

It's remembered with this little poem (which gathered a new audience when recited by "V" in the movie of the same name)

Remember, remember the Fifth of November,
The Gunpowder Treason and Plot,
I know of no reason
Why the Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot.
Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes, t'was his intent
To blow up the King and Parli'ment.
Three-score barrels of powder below
To prove old England's overthrow;
By God's providence he was catch'd (or by God's mercy*)
With a dark lantern and burning match.

I wonder, if the gunpowder plot had succeeded whether freedom of religion would have come earlier to the United Kingdom or whether the successors would have imposed the same tyrrany upon the masses as the reigning gentry of the day?
